Students at the Schwartz School of Business are active in establishing, organizing and managing a number of student societies that appeal to a diverse array of interests. These include the following:
Schwartz Investment Society
Schwartz Investment Society is St. Francis Xavier University’s student investment society. The society was founded in 2001 by one student and a faculty advisor, Mary Oxner. Our primary goal is to bridge the gap between the classroom and the finance industry by developing additional skills and knowledge in students. We provide the opportunity for all St. Francis Xavier University students to engage and learn more about the world's financial industry through a variety of approaches including: guest speakers, workshops, trips, regular meetings, etc. With a primary focus on investment management, Schwartz Investment Society plays a role in the development of finance students at the Gerald Schwartz School of Business.
A campus society dedicated to entrepreneurship, green business, financial education and so much more, we run projects to benefit the local and global community. One of the strongest societies at StFX, Enactus StFX is currently running 7 projects, such as X-DENN, Perfect Cents, and the Greenhouse Initiative, that help better the social, economic and environmental landscape for the future. We look for students who aren't just looking to hold a position but to make real contributions and impacts; join today and help charge your resume with outputs and outcomes. Meet with business leaders and corporate executives at our regional and national competitions and leadership summits where we present on our team's impact for cash to reinvest into our projects. We'd love to have you work with us and learn real life skills while helping others. We have a simple project involvement structure, with a project manager for each project and an Executive team.
JDC Central is Canada’s fastest growing business student competition. On average, there are generally ~600 competitors from 14 major business schools, making JDC Central one of the largest competitions in Canada. JDC Central is a three-day event that showcases athletics, social spirit, and charity, with an emphasis on academics.
Academic teams are comprised of three individuals in each of the following areas: marketing, finance, accounting, information systems, strategy, international business, human resources and entrepreneurship. Each team is given three hours to solve a business case and build a presentation of their recommendations. The teams must solve the case with limited resources-- one laptop and no connection to the outside world. Students are forced to utilize their creativity and academic training to solve complex problems. Industry experts act as judges to determine the feasibility and value of each team’s proposal. JDC Central provides university students from across the country an excellent opportunity to apply their classroom knowledge in a real world setting.
Women in Business Society
Schwartz Women in Business was founded in 2010 at St. Francis Xavier University. We host various skill building and networking events throughout the year, such as corporate tours, panels, workshops, and conferences. As one of the most active business society on campus, we constantly strive to create experiences which enable all members to feel represented within our organization. We have grown significantly since 2010, having been recognized by The Students Union as Society of The Year in 2013, 2014, and 2017. Schwartz Women in Business recognizes diversity as a catalyst in organizational success and helps position business students to develop into business leaders.
uThe X-Entrepreneurs act as a platform and a catalyst for student led initiatives, which showcase the true form of entrepreneurship. They encourage students to manifest their own ideas into a marketable product or service. This society helps students showcase their manifestation with small business fair and potentially sell their product in the Schwartz store. They also encourage entrepreneurship by bringing local entrepreneurs to tell their story and hopefully motivate students to take on this path.
StFX is proud to welcome a new society to campus. As of 2017 the StFX Schwartz DECA chapter has been launched and is ready for action. Members and executive will develop case study skills and will receive the opportunity to compete in various DECA competitions.
The Co-op Society acts as a support system for those already involved in the Co-operative Education Program as well as those interested in joining. The society has a strong focus on recruitment and aims to educate St. FX students on the benefits of the Co-op Program. Furthermore, the Co-op Society is a great way for students who are curious about the program to gain first-hand knowledge and advice from fellow St. FX students who have experienced the advantages of the Co-op Program.
